About the Play
ZOOMAN AND THE SIGN takes place in the aftermath of a senseless act of violence — the killing of a young girl in her own neighborhood. As the community reels, a man known only as "Zooman" walks the streets freely, taunting the people who saw what happened but will not speak. What unfolds is a devastating exploration of fear, complicity, and the impossible choices we make when speaking up could cost us everything.
Written with Fuller's trademark combination of brutal honesty and deep compassion, the play remains one of the most important American dramas of the last fifty years. It is a work that demands to be experienced live — in a room, with an audience, in real time.
About Charles Fuller
Charles Fuller was an American playwright and screenwriter whose work reshaped the landscape of contemporary theatre. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his masterwork A Soldier's Play, which he later adapted into the Academy Award-nominated film A Soldier's Story. His plays are known for their moral seriousness, their sharp dialogue, and their unflinching examination of race, justice, and the American experience. Fuller passed away in 2022, leaving behind a body of work that continues to shape how we understand the stage.
"The silence in this play is deafening — and it is our silence too. That's what makes it essential." — Theatre of Arts Creative Lab
