About the Florestano Vancini Film School

Named after the acclaimed Italian director Florestano Vancini, the school is one of Italy's leading institutions for film education. Based in the historic city of Ferrara — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a thriving cultural scene — the school trains filmmakers in the full spectrum of cinematic craft: directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and production.

Its faculty is composed of working Italian filmmakers and industry professionals, and its student body is drawn from across Europe and beyond. The school's philosophy — grounded in craft, history, and a deep respect for cinema as an art form — aligns closely with the values we hold here at Theatre of Arts Creative Lab.

What the Exchange Will Involve

Details are still being finalized, but the exchange program is being designed to include several core components. Emerging filmmakers and actors from Theatre of Arts Creative Lab will have the opportunity to:

  • Study abroad in Ferrara — Immersive short-term intensives and semester options hosted by the Florestano Vancini Film School
  • Collaborate on international short films — Joint production projects pairing TOA students with Italian counterparts
  • Attend workshops and masterclasses — Taught by Italian faculty and visiting industry professionals
  • Participate in a cultural immersion experience — Living and working in one of Italy's most vibrant creative cities
  • Host visiting Italian students in Los Angeles — Reciprocity is at the heart of the program, with Italian students traveling to Hollywood to train alongside our community

Why Italy, Why Now

Italy has been one of the most important creative forces in the history of cinema — from the neorealist movement to the golden age of Italian filmmaking to the contemporary directors shaping global screens today. For an actor or filmmaker training in Hollywood, direct exposure to that tradition isn't just educational — it is transformative.

At the same time, Italian film students have long looked to Hollywood as the epicenter of the industry. A true exchange — one that goes both ways — gives both communities something they cannot get alone: direct, hands-on access to a different way of seeing, working, and telling stories.

"An actor is only as good as the world they've been exposed to. The more you see, the more you have to bring to a role. This exchange is about widening the world our students can draw from." — Theatre of Arts Creative Lab

Who Can Participate

The Italy Exchange Program will initially be open to current Theatre of Arts Creative Lab students and recent alumni. Selection will be based on a combination of application materials, faculty recommendation, and demonstrated readiness for international study. Specific eligibility requirements, timelines, and costs will be announced as the program is finalized.

We are also exploring a parallel track for Italian students traveling to Los Angeles, giving both schools an opportunity to host visiting artists and create joint creative work.

What's Next

The partnership is currently in its development phase. In the coming months, we will be announcing:

  1. Program timelines and application windows
  2. Detailed curriculum and course offerings
  3. Costs, housing options, and travel logistics
  4. Faculty leads on both sides of the exchange
  5. The first cohort of selected participants

We can't wait to share more with you. In the meantime, arrivederci — and stay tuned.
