Take the TOA #HollywoodSelfTape Challenge
Sharpen your on-camera craft with the TOA #HollywoodSelfTape Challenge

Self-tapes are the new first audition. Long before you ever step into a room with a casting director, the tape you submit from your living room or a friend's apartment is doing the work of getting you seen — or getting you passed over. And the truth is, most actors have never been taught how to do it well.

That's why we're launching the TOA #HollywoodSelfTape Challenge — a free, open-to-everyone challenge designed to help actors sharpen their on-camera self-tape skills in just two weeks. No fees. No gimmicks. Just the work.

How It Works

Every day for two weeks, we'll release a new self-tape prompt — a short scene, a monologue, or a specific on-camera challenge. You record your tape, post it to Instagram or TikTok with the hashtag #HollywoodSelfTape, and tag @toahollywood. That's it.

Throughout the challenge, our faculty will be watching the hashtag. Each week we'll feature standout tapes on our social channels and offer feedback. At the end of the challenge, one actor will be selected for a free slot in an upcoming TOA Creative Lab workshop.

What You'll Practice

The challenge is built around the real skills casting directors look for in a self-tape — not just "acting well," but the technical and creative craft that makes a tape stand out. Over the two weeks, you'll work on:

  • Framing and eyeline — how to position yourself on camera
  • Lighting and sound — getting a clean, professional read from any space
  • Slating and intro — the first 10 seconds that set the tone
  • Cold reads — how to make a scene work when you've just seen it
  • Adjusting for the lens — scaling your performance for close-ups
  • Taking direction on tape — how to adjust and re-record with intention

Why Self-Tapes Matter

Ten years ago, most auditions happened in a room. Today, the majority of first-round casting decisions are made from tapes. That shift has opened doors for actors who might never have had access to traditional casting offices — but it has also raised the bar. A great self-tape can launch a career. A bad one can end a conversation before it starts.

At Theatre of Arts Creative Lab, we believe self-tape skills are not optional — they are essential. This challenge is our way of sharing that training with the broader actor community, in the spirit of the craft.

"Your self-tape isn't about being perfect. It's about being clear, present, and specific — and giving the people watching a reason to want to meet you." — TOA Faculty

How to Join

  1. Follow us on Instagram and TikTok at @toahollywood.
  2. Sign up for challenge prompts by emailing us at [email protected].
  3. Watch for the first prompt on the official start date.
  4. Post your tape with #HollywoodSelfTape and tag @toahollywood.
  5. Keep going — every tape counts. Consistency is the whole point.
No camera? No problem. A phone is enough. Good lighting, a tripod (or a stack of books), and a quiet room will get you further than expensive gear. What matters is the work.

The Prize

Every participant who completes the full two weeks will be entered into a drawing for a free slot in an upcoming TOA Creative Lab workshop. One standout tape, chosen by our faculty, will also be featured across our social channels — a chance to be seen by casting professionals who follow our work.

Ready to Start?

The #HollywoodSelfTape Challenge is open to actors at every level — whether you've been on set for years or you're recording your very first tape. All you need is a willingness to show up, hit record, and learn in public.

We can't wait to see what you create. Follow along, tag us, and don't forget the hashtag. #HollywoodSelfTape.
